Student Guide to AI Use

In recent years, AI tools have become increasingly significant in learning processes as well as in the job market.

In this guide, you’ll find the University’s AI policy, recommended tools, and tips on how to use them effectively and responsibly.

Remember that AI tools are meant to supplement your learning, not replace it. Use them alongside your course materials while continuing to develop your own critical thinking, writing, and research skills.

⚠️ What are the risks of using AI tools irresponsibly in learning?

  • AI tools may provide incorrect or inaccurate answers, and at times may even fabricate sources.

  • Assignments written entirely with AI tools may be superficial and generic, or may not fully align with the assignment instructions.

  • Using AI may lead to an “Illusion of learning” — the feeling that we understand something because we received an explanation, even though we did not actively process the information ourselves.

  • Some studies suggest that the use of AI tools may negatively affect learning. For example: (a) Impairment of critical thinking skills. (b) Reduced brain activity during writing tasks.

Is it allowed to use AI in assignments?

University Policy on AI Use:

Each course syllabus includes a section in which the instructor defines their policy regarding the use of AI in the course. Please review the syllabus carefully.

If the syllabus does not include specific guidance from the instructor, you are required to follow the University’s general policy on the use of AI.

The University’s Main Expectations When Using AI:

  • Maintain transparency
If required by your instructor, be transparent and accurately report your use of AI.

  • Apply critical thinking
Read AI-generated responses carefully. Make sure you understand and analyze them, verify their accuracy (including sources), and then rephrase them in your own words or edit them to reflect your own understanding.

  • Take responsibility
You are solely responsible for the quality of your work.

Which tool should I use for...

Below are AI tools that may support your learning process.

These tools offer both a free version and a paid version.

They provide a range of solutions for different tasks, and some of them overlap in their capabilities.
We invite you to explore the categories, experiment with the tools, and choose the ones that best suit your needs.

Popular chatbots specialize in simulating human conversation, but are less focused on providing responses based on verified sources. For source-based answers, we recommend exploring the following tools:

  • Perplexity – Provides detailed, source-based answers, including simple and convenient filtering and refinement of sources.

  • Elicit – Assists with searching, analyzing, and understanding academic articles.

  • Primo AI – Integrated into the University Library’s search engine, it provides short, focused answers based on the University Library’s databases.
